Item description, condition report, payment options and related products below

First edition, first print hardback of CONSTABLE ON THE PROWL by Nicholas Rhea and published by Robert Hale Limited, London, 1980. The second book in the acclaimed Heartbeat series.

The book is in very good condition (clean black cloth boards and silver lettering on the spine) with minor wear to the illustrated dust jacket, which is not price clipped (light creasing to edges mainly and a small fingernail closed tear to the front top edge and faint tanning inside the jacket). Internally, the pages are clean and tight, there are no tears and no inscriptions.

Constable on the Prowl was the second Constable book, published in 1980. This original edition, published by Robert Hale, is long out of print, and has become a collector's item. It has been reissued in a Black Dagger edition and has now been chosen by Accent Press to launch their series of Heartbeat editions of the early Constable titles.

Constable on the Prowl followed Constable on the Hill, published the previous year, which had introduced Constable Nick as a newcomer to the village of Aidensfield. It is exceptional among Nicholas Rhea's books in that it takes place almost entirely at night. It brings together a number of incidents, anecdotes and reflections on the theme of night-duty - which does not seem to be Constable Nick's favourite part of his job.

"Once he was settled in Aidensfield, Police Constable Nicholas Rhea had to work night duty in the villages and market towns of North Yorkshire. In those lovely places, he expected peace and tranquillity. He knew that a period of night duty helped a Constable to find his hearings. It provided time to discover the lesser-known parts of the district and it allowed him a privileged glimpse into the private lives of the residents. But P. C. Rhea's night life was not as simple as he expected.

This book, a splendid and light-hearted successor to Constable on the Hill, portrays a fascinating array of policemen and rural characters. There is the stolid P.C. Ventress, butt of frequent pranks by his colleagues, until he craftily turns the tables by pulling a lavatory chain and pushing a trumpet through a mangle.

There is the delicious Prudence Proctor who dances naked by the light of the full moon and the amorous painter whose love-making sets a hillside on fire. Rhea tells of a rugby football team who attempted to extinguish a century-old peat fire and the traffic patrol driver whose vocal impressions over the loud-hailer caused alarm in town and village alike.

In this highly readable book, Nicholas Rhea continues his account of the life of a village policeman. He shows the reader something of the loneliness of working through the night, but gives a vivid account of his friendship with a wild badger called Belinda and relates how the ghost of Elsinby was laid, almost at the expense of Sergeant Blaketon's life.

This book will keep you chuckling from beginning to end and is a fitting companion for Constable on the Hill."

192 pages.
