Item description, condition report, payment options and related products below

First UK edition, first print hardback of KANE AND ABEL by Jeffrey Archer and published by Hodder and Stoughton Limited, London in 1979.

The book is in very good condition (Clean maroon cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine and blue top page ends) with only slight wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped (minor creasing to spine edges, very light rubbing to a couple of corners, and a tiny fingernail tear to the bottom corner of the spine). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions.

Best-selling English author and former politician Jeffrey Howard Archer - Baron Archer of Weston-super-Mare - alongside his literary work, was a Member of Parliament (1969– 74), and deputy chairman of the Conservative Party (1985–86). He was made a life peer in 1992. He is the only author ever to have been a number one bestseller in fiction (fifteen times), short stories (four times) and non-fiction The Prison Diaries.

Kane and Abel proved to be his best-selling work, reaching number one on the New York Times bestsellers list. Kane and Abel has sold over 33 million copies worldwide and is now on its 84th reprint. It was made into a television mini-series by CBS in 1985, starring Peter Strauss and Sam Neill.

"After the wit and sophistication of NOT A PENNY MORE, NOT A PENNY LESS and the mounting tension of SHALL WE TELL THE PRESIDENT? Jeffrey Archer has achieved in KANE AND ABEL a masterful piece of storytelling which contains all these gifts. The story took him two years to research, and stretches across a far wider canvas than he has attempted hitherto, following the lives of two men born in different continents on the same day in 1906 right through to the present decade.

The two men concerned are William Lowell Kane, a Bostonian, born to wealth and position in the hospital built by his father, and Wladek Koskiewicz, a first-generation immigrant, born penniless and discovered in a Polish forest.

Kane - bright, incisive and industriuos - is a descendant of the Lowells and the Cabots, who consider vast wealth no more than their natural right. Koskiewicz - sharp, determined, and hard-working - is the illegitimate son of a gypsy mother, who when adopted by the Baron Rosnovski learns to consider vast wealth something that he must acquire.

Consumed by ambition - Kane, to surpass the financial achievements of his father, Koskiewicz, to rise above the world of his humble origins - each pursues his own road to success. Kane, not satisified by his family wealth, makes a further million before leaving Harvard, becomes a director of his father's bank at twenty-two, and then falls in love with a woman of both beauty and courage who changes his whole attitude to life.

Koskiewicz, his native courage and cunning matured in the prison camps of Siberia and the back alleys of Odessa, marries a Polish girl and begins a classic rags-to-riches story that cannot be fully satisfied until he has achieved the social status and respect of the William Kanes of this world.

Both men's lives change the day they meet, and a conflict starts which causes them to fall out - irreparably. A shared hatred develops, to continue for forty years, setting the stage for a confrontation that rocks the financial community of America and leads to a final chapter, when they meet face to face, so devastating in its effect that it is at once ironic, tragic and memorable.

Rich with charecters and with a marvellous sense of the times in which they lived, Jeffrey Archer's novel is a triumphant work of fiction."

'If there were a Nobel Prize for storytelling, Archer would win' - Daily Telegraph

'The ultimate novel of sibling rivalry' - Dan Brown

'Probably the greatest storyteller of our age' -- Mail on Sunday
