First UK edition, first print hardback of THE SHIP THAT DIED OF SHAME AND OTHER STORIES., by Nicholas Monsarrat and published by Cassell & Company Ltd., London in 1959.

The book is in good condition (Clean dark blue cloth boards with silver lettering on spine), with some wear to the dust jacket which is price clipped (creasing, rubbing and chipping to the spine edges, some rubbing to the corners, a one inch closed tear to the top spine corner, slight tanning inside the jacket). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions. There is light tanning and some foxing to the pages and page ends.

Nicholas Monsarrat was born in Liverpool and educated at Cambridge University, where he studied law. His career as a solicitor encountered a swift end when he decided to leave Liverpool for London, with a half-finished manuscript under his arm and £40 in his pocket. His first book to attract attention was the largely autobiographical This is the Schoolroom.

During World War Two he joined the Royal Navy and served in the corvettes. His war experience provided the framework for the novel HMS Marlborough will enter Harbour, one of his best known books. The Cruel Sea was made into a classic film starring Jack Hawkins.

Established as a top name writer Monsarrat's writing career concluded with The Master Mariner. Well known for his concise story telling and tense narrative, he became one of the most successful novelists of the twentieth century, whose rich and varied collection bears the hallmarks of a truly gifted writer.

"Since The Cruel Sea, Monsarrat has written two novels, The Story Of Esther Costello and The Tribe That Lost Its Head. He has also written a number of short stories, all of which sustain his reputation as a remarkable craftsman.

In this volume he has brought together ten of the best of these under the title of the most well-known – The Ship That Died of Shame. This is a story of a war-time motor gun boat, whose conscience triumphed when she was converted for smuggling, was the basis of the brilliant British film of the same title which made MGM 1087 almost as famous as Compass Rose. The other stories are: Oh To Be In England!; The Reconciliation; The List; The Thousand Islands Snatch; Up the Garden Path; The Man Who Wanted a Mark IX; I Was There; The Dinner Party; Licensed to Kill; Postscript.

Such variety is typical of this collection of ten stories. All bear the Monsarrat hallmark of deft, startlingly vivid characterization. Whether he writes of fighting ships or luxury liners, of men or women fighting for life or death, for ambition or greed, Monsarrat exhibits his own brand of wry sophistication and gets under the skin with deiscomfiting perception."
