Item description, condition report, payment options and related products below

First edition, first print hardback of ROSY IS MY RELATIVE by Gerald Durrell and published by Collins Clear-Type Press Ltd., London in 1968. The jacket design is by Jack Larkin.

The book is in very good condition (Clean red cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine which has minor creasing to the bottom spine edges) with minor wear to the illustrated dust jacket, which is not price clipped (light creasing to the edges, and slight tanning along the edges inside the jacket). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions. There is very light tanning to pages.

Gerald Durrell OBE was one of Britain's best loved authors and pioneering naturalists. He was born in 1925 in Jamshedpur, India to British parents. After moving to the United Kingdom and mainland Europe, his family eventually settled on the Greek island of Corfu where he studied zoology and kept numerous local wild animals as pets. In 1945, he became a student keeper for the Whipsnade Zoo in England. He went on wildlife expeditions to Cameroon, British Guiana, Madagascar, and many other countries. He founded the Jersey Zoological Park and the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust with the purpose of breeding endangered species.

Encouraged to write about his life's work by his novelist brother Lawrence, Durrell published his first book, The Overloaded Ark, in 1953. It soon became a bestseller and he went on to write thirty-six other titles, including My Family and Other Animals, The Bafut Beagles, Encounters with Animals, The Drunken Forest, A Zoo in My Luggage, The Whispering Land, Menagerie Manor, The Amateur Naturalist, The Aye-Aye and I and, with Lee Durrell, Durrell in Russia.

His best-known book My Family and Other Animals tells of his childhood on Corfu. Later made into a TV series. In 1962, he and his wife went to New Zealand, Australia, and Malaya to film a TV series, Two in the Bush. Durrell wrote a number of books based on his life as an animal collector and enthusiast.

Durrell's only two novels for adults are Rosy is My Relative, a story about a bequeathed elephant which Durrell claimed is based on real life events, and The Mockery Bird, the fable based loosely on the story of Mauritius and the Dodo. Durrell's works have been translated into 31 languages, and made into TV serials, and feature films. He was awarded the OBE in 1982. He died on January 30, 1995 after an extended illness.

"Rosy, the elephant bequeathed to young Adrian Rookwhistle by a reprobate relative, turns out to be a handful; not alone because of her size but also because of her fondness for strong drink. To Adrian she represents the chance to get away from a city shop and a suburban lodging by exploiting her theatrical talent and experience. To Rosy their progress towards the gayer South Coast resorts offered undreamed-of opportunities for drink and destruction.

So the Monkspepper Hunt is driven to delirium and Lady Fenneltree’s stately home reduced to a shambles. In due course the always efficient local constabulary caught up with the pair, whose ensuing trial was alike a triumph of the law and of the author's comic genius. The verdict was—but the story has to be read to be believed, if then.

Even though the author does maintain that it is entirely credible, indeed that this, his first novel, is 'an almost true story'."
