Item description, condition report, payment options and related products below

First UK edition, first print hardback of THE DANCING DODO by John Gardner and published by Hodder and Stoughton Limited, London in 1978. The jacket design is by Terry Hadler.

The book is in very good condition (Clean blue cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine) with minor wear to the illustrated dust jacket, which is not price clipped (light creasing to the edges, very light rubbing to the corners, and slight tanning along the edges inside the jacket). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions. There are a couple of very small stains and minor tanning to the front endpaper.

John Gardner, one of the authors of the well-known James Bond stories, was born in Northumberland, England on November 20, 1926. He attended Cambridge University and was a member of the Royal Marines. He became a journalist and a critic after leaving the service. Gardner's first novel was 'The Liquidator' (1964) and it introduced the character Boysie Oakes. Gardner went on to write over fifty works of fiction, including fourteen original James Bond novels, and the novel versions of two Bond films. In the 1970's, he wrote a series of novels known as the Moriarty Journals, which brought back Professor Moriarty, Sherlock Holmes' nemesis.

In the 1980's, the holders of the James Bond copyright commissioned him to begin a new series with 007. The first Bond novel written by Gardner was 'License Renewed' (1981), which was a success. From that point on, Gardner produced a new Bond novel every year, with the exception of 1985, until he retired from the series in 1996.

"Each year the marshland of England's south coast gives up the secrets of World War II. After over thirty years, aircraft wreckage is still regularly dug from the silt, together with the remains of aircrew - British, American and German. This is fact.

During the heatwave summer of 1976, the remains of a twin-engined Martin Marauder bomber emerged from Romney Marsh. Airframe and engine numbers are available. The aircraft belonged to a squadron of the United States Eighth Army Air Force stationed in Norfolk. It was nicknamed Dancing Dodo.

The dogtags, on what is left of six bodies, give positive identification of five original members of Dodo's crew, and one RAF officer. The pieces fit, until Locator Information, Washington, and the Ministry of Defence files in London, produce the fact that Dancing Dodo did not go missing during the war, and that the dead members are still very much alive...

In The Dancing Dodo, John Gardner has created an uncomfortable and totally believable picture of events and people from both past and present. His novel is also a riveting allegory on the deadly legacy past wars leave for future generations."

250 pages.
