Item description, condition report, payment options and related products below

First printing of this illustrated edition hardback of THE HOBBIT Or There and Back Again, by J. R. R. Tolkien and illustrated by Michael Hague. Published by George Allen & Unwin Publishers Ltd., London in 1984. Includes Thror’s Map and the Map of Wilderland on integral pages. Features 48 colour illustrations by Michael Hague.

The book is in very good condition (clean green faux-leather boards with gilt lettering on spine and gilt Tolkien monogram on front) with very slight wear to the illustrated dust jacket, which is not price clipped (light creasing and rubbing to the edges mainly around the spine, a small area of slight film peeling at the bottom corner). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions. There is minor yellowing towards the page ends.

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford University from 1925 to 1945 and Merton Professor of English Language and Literature there from 1945 to 1959. He was a close friend of C. S. Lewis—they were both members of the informal literary discussion group known as the Inklings. Tolkien was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II on 1972.

After his death, Tolkien's son Christopher published a series of works based on his father's extensive notes and unpublished manuscripts, including The Silmarillion. These, together with The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings form a connected body of tales, poems, fictional histories, invented languages, and literary essays about a fantasy world called Arda, and Middle-earth within it. Between 1951 and 1955, Tolkien applied the term legendarium to the larger part of these writings.

While many other authors had published works of fantasy before Tolkien, the great success of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings led directly to a popular resurgence of the genre. This has caused Tolkien to be popularly identified as the "father" of modern fantasy literature —or, more precisely, of high fantasy.

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, better known by its abbreviated title The Hobbit was published on 21 September 1937 to wide critical acclaim, being nominated for the Carnegie Medal and awarded a prize from the New York Herald Tribune for best juvenile fiction. The book remains popular and is recognized as a classic in children's literature.

"The Hobbit is a tale of high adventure, undertaken by a company of dwarves in search of dragon-guarded gold. A reluctant partner in this perilous quest is Bilbo Baggins, a comfort-loving unambitious hobbit, who surprises even himself by his resourcefulness and skill as a burglar.

Encounters with trolls, goblins, dwarves, elves and giant spiders, conversations with the dragon, Smaug the Magnificent, and a rather unwilling presence at the Battle of Five Armies are some of the adventures that befall Bilbo. But there are lighter moments as well: good fellowship, welcome meals, laughter and song.

Bilbo Baggins has taken his place among the ranks of the immortals of children’s fiction. Written by Professor Tolkien for his own children, The Hobbit met with instant critical acclaim when published. Now, for the first time, Tolkien's enduring fantasy has been illustrated by an artist of sensitivity and distinction. Michael Hague's editions of The Wind in the Willows and other classic works have earned him a devoted following and reputation. Through his richly textured paintings, the artist has created a magnificent panorama of the world of Middle-earth and brought to life Tolkien's immense cast of characters. Michael Hague's interpretation of The Hobbit will become a collector's item to be treasured forever."
