Item description, condition report, payment options and related products below

First UK edition, first print hardback of UNFINISHED TALES of Númenor and Middle-earth, by J.R.R. Tolkien and published by George Allen & Unwin Ltd., London in 1980. Edited by Christopher Tolkien. Includes fold-out map in excellent condition.

The book is in near fine condition (Clean maroon cloth boards with bright gilt lettering and decoration to spine) with only minor wear to the illustrated dust jacket which is not price clipped (no printed price). The blue ink on the jacket illustration is of a dark shade and is unfaded. The tail portion of the front cover illustration extends to the inside jacket flap and here too the colour is of a dark shade, a strong indication that this is a first state dust jacket (further explanation below). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions. Maroon topstain clean and unfaded.

Seven impressions issued, all similar: 1st Impression 1980, 2nd Impression 1980, 3rd Impression 1980, 4th Impression 1981, 5th Impression 1981, 6th Impression 1982, 7th Impression 1984. The first three impressions combined totalled 44,000 copies. All copies of the dustwrapper lacked a printed price - the price was added on a label. Several copies have been seen with the first part of each letter on the left hand side of page 234 cropped. One of these copies was a review copy, so this variant may have priority of issue. This is not one of those copies.

The shades of brown, blue, red and green inks used on the dustwrapper vary from impression to impression. Fading of the blue ink on the dustwrapper to a pale grey-green colour is particularly common. Unusually this fading can even extend to the front flap which suggests that the fading is not competely due to light exposure.

Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-earth is a collection of narratives ranging in time from the Elder Days of Middle-Earth to the end of the War of the Ring, and comprising such various elements as Gandalf's lively account of how it was that he came to send the Dwarves to the celebrated party at Bag-End, the emergence of the sea-god Ulmo before the eyes of Tuor on the coast of Beleriand, and an exact description of the military organisation of the Riders of Rohan. The book contains the only story that survived from the long ages of Númenor before its downfall, and all that is known about such matters as the Five Wizards, the Palantiri and the legend of Amroth.

Writing of the Appendices to The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien said in 1955, 'Those who enjoy the book as a "heroic romance" only, and find "unexplained vistas" part of the literary effect, will neglect the Appendices, very properly.' Unfinished Tales is avowedly for those who, to the contrary, have not yet sufficiently explored Middle-earth, its languages, its legends, its politics, and its kings.

The collection has been edited by Christopher Tolkien, who explains in his Introduction the very various treatment these writings have demanded, and who has provided a commentary on each of the 'Tales'. He has redrawn the map accompanying The Lord of the Rings on a larger scale, and with the addition of new features and names; and has reproduced the only map of Númenor that J.R.R. Tolkien ever made."

472 pages. Index, a map of 'Númenórë' is located opposite page 168, the map of 'The West of Middle-earth at the End of the Third Age' is inserted on a fold-out sheet at rear.
