A thrilling story of man and the sea and the inescapable power of nature.

Philip Marsden's brilliant first novel is set in Cornwall, in the mid-1930s. The bustling coastal community of Polmayne is on the threshold of the modern age - fishing is in decline, electricity has just arrived and the village is flanked by building sites and brand-new holiday villas.

When Jack Sweeney arrives, bankrupt and alone, he finds himself transformed by the presence of the sea. He discovers he has the attribute most prized among the town's struggling fishermen: luck. He buys a boat, and becomes a member of the lifeboat crew. He falls in love. But in the hardy enthusiasm for his new life are the seeds of tragedy.
