Philip Haythornthwaite WATERLOO MEN First Edition
First UK edition, first print hardback of WATERLOO MEN (The Experience of Battle 16-18 June 1815) by Philip J. Haythornthwaite (with colour plates by Bryan Fosten) and published by The Crowood Press, Marlborough in 1999.The book is in very good condition (red cloth boards with gold lettering to spine and front) with just a bit of light wear to the very good dust jacket, which is not price clipped (rubbing to edges). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions.
Waterloo has a claim to be the most discussed battle of all time; its significance, and its unfolding events, make it almost theatrically irresistible to any reader with a feel for history.
It was the battle that finished the career of one of history's handful of indisputable military geniuses; it brought to a close a twenty-year world war, and it altered the destinies of the great powers for nearly a hundred years.
The strategy and tactics of the Waterloo campaign have been endlessly analysed. But in 1815 the outcome of battles could still turn on the personalities and behaviour of individual men; and the men of Waterloo were not just witnesses, but shapers of the defining event in the history of their times.
This deeply researched account is told through the words of Wellington's redcoats - the impressions of individual officers and men amid the roar, the smoke, the stench, the carnage of battle at close quarters.
