First edition first print hardback of NEWS FROM TARTARY: A Journey from Peking to Kashmir by Peter Fleming and published by Jonathan Cape in 1936. Includes fold out map at the front.

The book is in very good condition considering it is 85 years old (burgundy cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine and front) with just light general wear. Burgundy top page edges. Rough cut bottom page edges. The book is in a good- unclipped dust jacket which is protected in an archival sleeve and has sundry tears, four of five areas of loss and a couple of small stains but very little or none of the text has been affected. Every letter is clear and readable. Internally the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears or inscriptions.

This fantastic book recounts Fleming's 3,500 miles (5,600 km) journey from Peking, China to Kashmir, India in 1935. He was accompanied on this journey by Ella Maillart (Kini). The journey started on 16 February 1935 and took seven months to complete. The objective of the journey was to ascertain what was happening in Tunganistan, a region of Sinkiang (also known as Chinese Turkestan), in the aftermath of the Kumul Rebellion. Fleming met with Ma Shaowu and Ma Hushan while in Xinjiang. The author notes that "Tartary is not strictly a geographical term, any more than Christendom is", and goes on to point out that Tartary is merely the name given to the place where the Tartars come from. He explains that in his usage it refers to Sinkiang and the highlands bordering it. The journey took the travellers from Peking to Tungkuan, then Sian, Pingliang, Lanchow, Sining, Dzunchia, Teijinar, Issik Pakte, Cherchen, Niya, Keriya, Khotan, Guma, Karghalik, Yarkand, Kashgar, Tashkurgan, Hunza, Nagar, Gilgit and finally Srinagar.

Overall, a very presentable copy of this classic travel book, complete with the often missing dust jacket.

384 pages including Index, illustrated with black and white photographs.
