Patrick Murphy HIS WAY THE BRIAN CLOUGH STORY

First edition, first print hardback of HIS WAY: THE BRIAN CLOUGH STORY, by Patrick Murphy and published by Robson Books in 1993.

The book is in near fine condition (clean red boards and bright gold lettering on spine) with only minor wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped (bit of rubbing and creasing to edges, light bumping to corners, nothing drastic at all). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions. Very slight spinal lean.

Brian Clough's footballing fame rests on two secure foundations: his achievements as a manager and his force of personality. He was the most charismatic character in the English game for over twenty five years. In turn infuriating, delighting and illuminating the public and officialdom with that distinctive nasal Yorkshire tone, he was impossible to ignore as he tilted at countless windmills with a bravado that stemmed from a deep-rooted sense of his own worth.

BBC Radio reporter Patrick Murphy observed Clough's unique managerial style at close quarters over the years. One of the few journalists to enjoy a consistent working relationship with Clough, Murphy draws on his own personal memories and those of Clough's players to present an incisive portrait of 'the great enigma'. His frustration at an early end to a brilliant playing career, his unique partnership with Peter Taylor, the failure to land the England manager's job, the fruitless quest for the FA Cup, the quirky methods used to motivate his players, the matchless way in which he manipulated the media - all this is captured in Murphy's penetrating book, which also traces the roots of Clough's sudden decision to retire, an announcement that shook the football world.

'His Way' is a fascinating study of the last of soccer's autocrats, one of the games greatest managers, but also a famous Englishman who transcended the narrow confines of professional sport.
