A first edition, first print hardback copy of PABLO, by Helen Griffiths and published by Hutchinson & Co in 1977. Signed by Griffiths on the half title page.

The book is in very good condition (green boards still bright with bright gold lettering to spine) with some minor wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped (light curling to edges, two fingernail closed tears and one small open tear to edges, one folding creasing to inside jacket flap, but none of this amounts to much). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no other inscriptions.

Pablo lived with grandparents on a small farm in Spain, while his parents worked in Germany. Grandfather bought Neska as a round puppy, all wrinkles and paws and thick grey fur, and Pablo was enchanted: she had been meant to protect the hens from wolves, but she soon became the centre of Pablo's life. When, in time, she had puppies of her own Pablo could think of nothing more delightful, but the farm had no room for pets and the puppies were drowned.

Pablo still had Neska, and when his parents came home from Germany he was too overjoyed to remember the puppies. With the birth of his little sister and all the excitement of having his family together, he hardly noticed when Neska ran wild. But intruding on his happiness came the tensions and anxieties created by the problems of the grown-ups around him.

Then Pablo discovered that Neska had more puppies up in the hills. He befriended them, believing that in protecting the little, half-savage dogs he was doing his loved Neska a kindness. Tragedy followed, and Pablo knew he was responsible.

The story of Pablo is exciting and also moving, told with all the skill for which Helen Griffiths became known.
