Signed 'Chandos' by Lyttelton on the front endpaper. The book is in very good condition (green cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine) with light bumping to the bottom corner of the front board and light creasing to the bottom edge of the spine. The book is in a very good unclipped dust jacket which has very light creasing to the top edge of the front cover as well as the top and bottom edges of the spine and back cover. Internally the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions.
In looking back on this eventful life Lord Chandos displays a pleasant wit and urbanity. He is unfailingly illuminating whatever his topic - whether he is writing about the Eton or Cambridge of his day, or describing the First World War as seen through the eyes of a regimental officer, or disscussing the various territories which came under his aegis as Colonial Secretary. During his life he has known nearly all his eminent contemporaries in the Army, politics and business; and among the most perceptive and enthralling parts of his book are the various portraits of personalities interspersed in the narrative - notably that of his close friend Sir Winston Churchill.
