First edition, first print hardback of NOT ALWAYS WITH THE PACK, by Dennis Walters and published by Constable & Co Ltd, London in 1989. Signed and inscribed, presumed by the author, on the title page (see picture below).The book is in very good condition (clean blue boards and bright silver lettering on spine) with only minor wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped (minor creasing to edges). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no other inscriptions. Light tanning to pages.
Autobiographical memoir by the UK Conservative MP. Born in Italy of Anglo-Italian parents. Dennis Walters was, while still only fourteen, actively engaged with the Italian resistance in German-occupied Florence and Rome. He worked under an assumed name and with forged papers. After the capture of Rome in 1944 he returned to school at Downside in England. The role of the Catholic church in protecting the persecuted forms part of this book. Became personal assistant to Lord Hailsham. In Not Always With The Pack. the author contributes his own perspective on Hailsham and provides many insights into his character and some delightful anecdotes from his time as Chairman as well as from behind the scenes in 1963.
