First edition first print hardback of OUT OF THE ROCK by Norman Bezzant (Introduction by Sir James Richards) and published by William Heinemann Ltd in 1980. Signed and inscribed on the title page, with a compliments slip to a previous owner, by Jonathan Pitt, General Manager of Hanson Bath & Portland Stone.The book is in very good condition (blue cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine) with light creasing to the top of the spine and light rubbing to the bottom as well as lightly age spotted page edges. The book is in a very good unclipped dust jacket which has light creasing to the top of the front cover and top and bottom of the spine and back cover. Internally the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions.
Out of the Rock tells the story of the first sixty years' development of The Bath and Portland Group, now pre-eminent in the stone industry. But the author has seen his subject as a cornerstone of history, putting the important and fascinating contribution made by the Group into perspective with England's political, social, and industrial history.
