Nicolette Milnes-Walker, MBE (1943-) was the first woman to sail non-stop single-handed across the Atlantic. She set sail on 12 June 1971 from Milford Haven, UK and arrived in Newport USA forty five days later on 26 July. She made her crossing in a 30 ft yacht, Aziz, a 'Pioneer' Class 9 meter designed by Van Der Stadt and constructed by Southern Ocean Shipyard Ltd, Poole, Dorset.

"Nicolette Milnes Walker is a petite, pretty girl of twenty-nine whose only experience of single-handed sailing before her now famous Atlantic crossing in the Summer of 1971 was a trip from Dale, on the south-west tip of Wales, to Ireland. Her cool courage - 'I could find no reason for not going. So I went' - tempered with certain recklessness - 'I can hardly swim' - is revealed on every page of this extremely personal account of her voyage.

From the buying and first trials of her thirty-foot, three-and-a-half-ton, sloop-rigged boat, Aziz, to the description of her first landing at Newport, Rhode Island, six weeks after the start, Miss Milnes Walker builds up in a matter-of-fact manner a comprehensive revelation of the day-to-day events that she either controlled or suffered during her lonely weeks at sea. Whether she is coping with a broken compass, some smashed rigging, or just a bout of loneliness, the story that comes through is one of extraordinary endeavour in circumstances that are not simply unique but that present conditions of maximum potential stress on a young, intensely lively, and unusual personality.

The result is a book that will give information and pleasure to many, whether a sailing enthusiast or just someone who enjoys an unusual success story."
