Nicholas Monsarrat THE MASTER MARINER First Editions Book 1 Signed by Monsarrat

First edition first print two-book hardback set of THE MASTER MARINER (Book 1: Running Proud & Book 2: Darken Ship) by Nicholas Monsarrat. Book 1 published by Cassell in 1978 and Book 2 published by Cassell in 1980.  Book 1 is signed and year dated by Monsarrat on the front endpaper. There is the personal library stamp of a previous owner also on the front endpaper, below the Monsarrat signature.

Both books are graded very good with some light general handling and storage wear. The unclipped dust jackets are similarly in very good condition, both protected in archival sleeves, though there is some moisture staining to the inside of Book 1's protective sleeve and this has bled slightly onto the inside of the dust jacket.

The full story of The Master Mariner cannot be told within the compass of one volume. Running Proud is the first half of this epic novel, carrying Matthew Lawe from the Armada to Trafalgar.

Book 2, Darken Ship concludes the story, as Lawe finds himself commanding a slaver working the infamous 'Round Trip' from Liverpool to the Caribbean. It is a savage story of squalor and human degradation.
