Ngaio Marsh WHEN IN ROME First Edition

First edition, first print hardback of WHEN IN ROME, by Ngaio Marsh and published by Collins Crime Club, London in 1970.

The book is in very good condition (clean red cloth boards and gold lettering on spine which has very slight creasing to the spine edges) with light wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped (slight creasing to edges mainly around the spine, and slight chipping to the top edges of the spine and a couple of corners, slight yellowing inside the jacket, lightly soiled, with some smudging at the back). Internally, the pages are clean and tight, there are no tears and no inscriptions. There is minor yellowing to the pages.

Dame Ngaio Marsh DBE ( 1895 – 1982) was a New Zealand crime writer and theatre director. She was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1966. Internationally Marsh is known for her 32 detective novels published between 1934 and 1982, primarily for her creation Inspector Roderick Alleyn, a gentleman detective who works for the Metropolitan Police (London). Thus she is one of the "Queens of Crime" alongside Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, and Margery Allingham.

Four of the Alleyn novels were adapted for television in New Zealand and aired there in 1977. Nine were adapted as The Inspector Alleyn Mysteries and aired by the BBC in 1993 and 1994 (the pilot originally in 1990). In 2010 the Dame Ngaio Marsh Trust created the Best Crime Novel Award, to be given annually.

"The party of tourists which Mr Sebastian Mailer of " Il Cicerone" Conducted Tours led into the Roman basilica of St Tommaso in Pallaria seemed much like any other. The members were all apparently well-to-do, strangers to Rome, and eager to hear Barnaby Grant, distinguished novelist and star attraction of the tour, discourse on the basilica. But when one of the party fails to emerge from S. Tommaso, and the body of someone unconnected with the tour is found hidden in the basilica's lowest depths, Superintendent Alleyn, in Rome incognito on the track of a drug-ring, is forced to show his hand.

The murder hunt, of course, is in the hands of the Roman Questura, but Alleyn takes charge of the members of Mr Mailer's tour and explores with them some of those aspects of la dolce vita which the tourist does not normally see. When a second murder occurs, Alleyn joins forces with the Roman police. The result is an unexpected and skilful ending which will both satisfy and surprise.

Neither Ngaio Marsh nor her famous detective Roderick Alleyn need any introduction to their vast and growing public. Here are both of them at their best."
