Andrzej Panufnik COMPOSING MYSELF First Edition 1987 Signed Dated Inscribed

First edition first print hardback of COMPOSING MYSELF by Andrzej Panufnik and published by Methuen Ltd in 1987. Signed, dated and inscribed to a previous owner by Panufnik on the front endpaper. The front pastedown/hinge has been roughly repaired.

The book is in very good condition (maroon cloth boards with gold lettering to spine) with light creasing to the top and bottom of the spine and some tanning around the page edges. The book is in a very good, unclipped dust jacket which has light creasing to the edges. Internally, the pages are otherwise clean and tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions.

Andrzej Panufnik, the celebrated composer, was born in Warsaw in 1914. His life, therefore, spans the period of the creation of an independent Poland; its uneasy inter-war years, culminating with the Hitler-Stalin pact; the Nazi occupation and the subsequent domination of the Soviet Union. His dramatic escape to England in 1954 made headlines throughout the world and he found his music, even his name, proscribed in his homeland. Composing Myself tells of his climb to international recognition as a musician; of his own search for a musical identity; and of a personal life often scarred by the upheavals of the age.
