Until the appearance of this book, the British Navy in the eighteenth century presented one of the great puzzles of history. If, as the stereotype has it, it was a floating hell, manned by miserably paid wretches, cowed by the lash and solaced by drink, how did it achieve a fighting record of brilliant success and a reputation for formidable efficiency?

In "The Wooden World" N. A. M. Rodger focuses on the Navy during the Seven Years War. Exploring life at sea - and ashore - in fascinating detail, he demonstrates that the accepted view of life abroad a warship is grotesque travesty. The lower deck was peopled by professional seamen, mostly young, whose job required fitness and sobriety. The keynote of the Georgian Navy was efficiency: from top to bottom everyone depended on everyone else - for career advencement, to win battles and for enrichment from prize money.

Whether he is discussing victualling and health, the press gang, children and animals abroad ship, mutiny and desertion or the perils of pursery, Dr Rodger is constantly challenging long-established assumptions, illuminating his thesis with scores of fascinating personal stories culled from the vast files of Admirally papers.

Impeccably researched, carefully argued and brilliantly original, "The Wooden World" is a major work of naval history.
