MY HUSBAND CARTWRIGHT Olivia Manning 1st/1st
First edition, first print hardback of MY HUSBAND CARTWRIGHT, by Olivia Manning, with illustrations by Len Deighton and published by William Heinemann Ltd in 1956.The book is in very good condition (blue boards still bright and clean, lettering on spine and motifs on front and back boards still clear) with some minor wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped (bit of rubbing and creasing to edges, couple of thumbnail tears in top edge, bumping to corners, small sticker removal residue at bottom of spine). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions. Light spotting to page edges. Overall, a very presentable item.
Cartwright is an imaginary character but there are few wives that will not recognize him. These stories, that first appeared in Punch, show us Cartwright and his masculine good sense dealing not only with important social and political issues, but such lesser problems as Pinky Bluett, the purchase of Biffo the killer horse, the search for Minky the lost Siamese cat, or the temptation to murder a room-mate who snores.Cartwright is revealed as an enigma of pure reason, a helpful hindrance, the quintessence of kindly egoism, generous to a fault - and what a fault! His simplicity is baffling. Its elucidation would call for the terms of space-time continuum. In short, he is the Eternal Husband.125 pages, illustrated with line drawings by Len Deighton. ISBN: n/a
