First edition first print hardback of MISS READ'S COUNTRY COOKING: Or To Cut a Cabbage Leaf by Miss Read and published by Michael Joseph Ltd in 1969. Signed and dated to a previous owner by Read (real name Dora Saint) and her husband (Doug) on the front endpaper. Uncommon signed.The book is in very good condition (orange cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine) with light colour fading to the top edges of the boards, light creasing to the head and tail of the spine and some light age tanning to the page edges. The book is in a good price-clipped dust jacket which has pronounced curling to the top edge of the front cover as well as creasing and rubbing to the edges and corners. Internally the pages are otherwise clean and tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions.
Miss Read, whose real name is Dora Jessie Saint, has been producing delightful novels of English village life since 1956. This cookbook is illustrated throughout with charming drawings and is noteworthy for the variety of its recipes.
