It is hard ro remain indifferent to owls, for they provoke in us adjectives unlikely to be used for any other bird. Whether it is the familiar, wise and friendly image from childhood stories or the average adult reactions - finding them fascinating, majestic and ethereal or weird and 'spooky' - we know and recognize owls. Above all, it is the barn owl, once seen or heard, which is never forgotten; the silently flying, pale nocturnal bird of prey, likely to cause alarm with its sudden outlandish call in the dark.
This study of Tyto alba, the barn owl provides an intriguing and revealing insight into the life of a very special and increasingly rare bird of prey. The Barn Owl describes and illustrates, with a wealth of original colour photography, every aspect of this bird's life; it is a book that is destined to become a major addition to ornithological literature. All the nobility and the mystery of this avian hunter of the night are shown within these pages.
The authors have studied the barn owl in all seasons and in all its moods - whether playful, gentle or quarrelsome, with many hours of watchful nights leading to a great knowledge of, and the ability to photograph, the bird's full life-cycle.
