Michael Seth-Smith INTERNATIONAL STALLIONS AND STUDS First Edition

First UK edition, first print hardback of INTERNATIONAL STALLIONS AND STUDS The Founders of Modern World Racing by Michael Seth-Smith and published by W. Foulsham & Co. Ltd., Slough, in 1974. Illustrated with twelve beautiful full color plates that depict a framed painting of these stallions by Lucas, Munnings, Millais, Reeves, Marchand, Dupont, Broadhead, etc.

The book is in very good condition (clean bright purple cloth boards with gilt horse illustration stamp on front and gilt lettering on spine) with some wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped (minor creasing to edges, slight rubbing/chipping to a couple of corners, slight rubbing to spine edges mainly to the top, a two-centimetre closed tear to the top corner and a thumbnail closed tear to the top corner at the back, a small area missing from the bottom edge inside the flap). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions.

The author and commentator on Racing for the Jockey Club and BBC, Michael Seth-Smith wrote in International Stallions And Studs about the success and influence of 11 dominant sires - Nearco, Nasrullah, Bold Ruler, Ribot, Hyperion, Fair Trial, Tourbillon, Never Say Die, Northern Dancer, Aureole, and Star Kingdom.

"Eleven famous stallions whose influence dominates Thoroughbred Breeding throughout the modern world, are the subject of International Stallions And Studs. Their racing careers, the lives of the men who bred them, and details of the studs where they stood as stallions, are highlighted in this fascinating and beautifully illustrated book.

Today bloodstock breeding encircles the globe, for the bloodlines of the 18th-Century Arabian stallions imported into Europe have crossed the Atlantic to the Americas, have established their influence in South Africa, Australia and Japan, and are returning to conquer in European Classic races. Horse Racing is an international Industry, with impeccably bred yearlings commanding stupendous prices at auction, and Classic winners being syndicated as stallions for millions of dollars. The sale rings are crowded with breeders, owners and their agents who hope to acquire a champion. In sale catalogues the bloodlines of Tourbillon, Hyperion and Nearco constantly appear in the pedigree of yearlings, for great stallions such as these have affected the destiny of bloodstock breeding, and will continue to do so for generations. Nijinsky, Mill Reef and Secretariat are three contemporary champions who trace back to Nearco, while Hyperion's descendants can be found in every corner of the globe. The author, Michael Seth-Smith has taken as his theme for this book the advice of Disraeli "Read no history, nothing but biography", for he believes that International Racing can best be appreciated by studying the careers of great racehorses which have had world wide influence as stallions."
