Michael Clayton THE CHASE First Edition
First edition, first print hardback of THE CHASE A modern Guide To Fox Hunting, by Michael Clayton and published by Stanley Paul & Co. Ltd., London, 1987. Foreword by the Duke of Beaufort. Drawings by John King,The book is in very good condition (clean maroon cloth boards and gilt lettering on spine which has only minor creasing to the edges of the spine) with minor wear to the illustrated dust jacket, which is not price clipped (light creasing to the edges, small red stain inside the jacket which is not visible from outside, very slight line marks in parts which are only visible under the light). Internally, the pages are clean and tight, there are no tears and no inscriptions. There is a brownish stain along the page edges of the last two pages and very slight staining to the page ends, but nothing at all drastic.
Fox hunting originated in its current form in the United Kingdom in the 16th century, but is practised all over the world, including in Australia, Canada, France, Ireland, Italy, Russia, and the United States. The sport is controversial, particularly in the UK, where bans were introduced for Scotland in 2002, then for England and Wales in November 2004. Proponents see it as an important part of rural culture and useful for reasons of conservation and pest control, while opponents argue that it is cruel and unnecessary.
"Foxhunting, described once as 'a passion, a poetry and a mystique', has been an integral part of rural life in Britain for hundreds of years. Today, more than ever, the sport is flourishing, with some 200 registered packs in the United Kingdom and a regular following of almost 400,000 people. Michael Clayton, editor of Horse and Hound and a leading authority in the field, has written the first complete up-to-date guide to the sport for many years. Highly practical, and enjoyable to read, The Chase is certain to become the standard work on its subject.
The Chase covers all aspects of the sport, from where to hunt and how a hunt is run to a who's who of modern foxhunting and advice on what to wear. Michael Clayton covers the history of the sport and surveys all the Hunts in the British Isles with the different methods used in varying terrains. He explains the organisation and financing of modern packs and the key role of the Field Master in leading and controlling the field. He considers the breeding, training and care of horse and hounds, and looks at the ecology and lifestyle of the modern fox from a hunting man's point of view. He discusses how to dress and how to behave in the field, the place of the sport in art and literature and the international foxhunting scene. Finally, Michael Clayton provides a valuable analysis of the current political campaign against the sport, setting out a detailed and persuasive case for fox hunting's future as a successful element in British country life.
The Chase both delights and informs, providing a fund of detailed advice for the new fox hunter and a wealth of insight and entertainment for the experienced hunting man or woman. The book is sure to become the definitive work of reference on foxhunting, and an essential addition to the library of hunting enthusiasts everywhere."
