"The construction of a model railway layout within an authentic scenic setting has always been of prime importance, and this book allows modellers at all levels to share the techniques and experiences of several accomplished practitioners, in a series of articles compiled and introduced by expert modeller Michael Andress.

Featuring numerous photographs and diagrams, the articles cover a wide range of different topics, from general planning principles to the addition of fine detail. The geographical locations for the prototypes being modelled are also very varied, ranging from the South Coast of England to Switzerland and East Africa, and though very different in character, they all demonstrate a high standard of scenic modelling.

From these general precepts, the book moves on to more specific projects, such as the realistic modelling of rock faces, farms, low-relief backgrounds, narrow gauge and miniature railways, and small docks and canal scenes.

If there is any lesson to be learned from this thorough study of the subject, it is that there is no single `right' or `wrong' way to go about scenic modelling. There are many varying methods and techniques, and by inviting different modellers to share their experiences with the reader, Michael Andress allows us to choose those which appeal most strongly, or indeed a combination of several. In this way, the scenic setting can be developed as one of the principal ways in which the modeller can add to his or her layout not only an authentic atmosphere but also a unique character and individuality."

Successful landscaping sets a model railway layout apart, yet many people are content merely to buy proprietary buildings, trees and accessories and go to no further in attempting to create authentic effects. This book, containing a series of articles by well-known contributors to the model railway press, describes many special effects, from the realistic weathering of rock faces to the creation of streams and cuttings that can be used to add that 'scenic dimension'. Fully illustrated, with photographs and plans, are several individual projects, both scratch built and based on commercial kits, which can be modified to suit different layouts - giving the modeller plenty of ideas on ways to improve his own model railway.
