Mervyn Peake TITUS ALONE Reset Hardback Signed by Maeve Peake
First reset and illustrated edition hardback of TITUS ALONE (Book 3 in the Gormenghast Trilogy) by Mervyn Peake and published by Eyre & Spottiswood in 1970. Signed twice by Maeve Peake (Mervyn Peake's wife) - once on the front endpaper using her married name and dated Dec 1972 and once on the half title page in her maiden name (Gilmore). The book is in very good- condition (green cloth boards with silver lettering to spine) with no more than light general wear (one or two light marks, very gentle rubbing and bumping). The book is in a good+ unclipped dust jacket which is chipped and frayed to the head and tail of the spine and has a one-inch closed tear to the top of the rear cover and a thumbnail closed tear to the bottom edge and another to the front top edge. There is also a long folding crease down the middle of the spine. Internally the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions.
Titus has abdicated. Born and brought to the edge of manhood in the huge, rotting castle of Gormenghast, he rebels against the intolerable age-old ritual of which he is both lord and prisoner and runs headlong into the world. From that moment the reader is engulfed in a stormy world of the imagination in which figures and landscapes loom up with all the vividness, the shock and the inexorable logic of dream or nightmare.
