This unusual novel is the story of Joseph Ashley, a writer whose first deep experience is his love for another youth. After an affair with a young sculptress his life is entirely changed; he finds that success in his work causes his relationships to fail, and they are what he really cares about. The resulting conflicts almost end in tragedy, but in consequence Joseph discovers the meaning of his life in a unique way.
