The early nineteenth century classic account of life in a small Berkshire village.

Mary Russell Mitford (1787 1855), was an English author and dramatist. She was born at Alresford, Hampshire. Her place in English literature is as the author of Our Village. This series of sketches of village scenes and vividly drawn characters was based upon life in Three Mile Cross, a hamlet in the parish of Shinfield, near Reading in Berkshire, where she lived. Mitford was an especially prolific and successful writer in a range of genres, from poetry to drama as well as the prose for which she has been best known.

Her inimitable series of country sketches, drawn from her own experiences at Three Mile Cross, entitled 'Our Village,' began to appear in 1819 in the 'Lady's Magazine,' a little-known periodical. The sketches had enormous success and were collected in five volumes, published respectively every other year from 1824 to 1832. Editions of the whole first appeared in 1843.

This Folio edition is a selection from the five-volume edition. The illustrations first produced for an Harrap edition of 1947. Introduction by Ronald Blythe who gives a short biography of Mitford, as well as explaining the social and historical context of the personal observations.
