Martin Cruz Smith NIGHTWING First Edition Horror Classic

First UK edition, first print hardback of NIGHTWING, by Martin Cruz Smith and published by Andre Deutsch Limited in 1977. Made into a film by Arthur Hiller and starring David Warner and Nick Mancuso.

The book is in fine condition (clean orange boards with bright gold lettering to spine) with only very minor wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped (the slightest rubbing and creasing to edges, very light bumping to corners, nothing much to speak of at all). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions. Some light age spotting to page edges.

A group of people camp out in the desert under a cloudless sky. Suddenly a girl exclaims that the moon has disappeared, and minutes later a grotesque terror descends out of the night.

Has it been called up by the old Hopi Indian, running coloured sands through his hand into an intricate painting? Black for death, red for blood.

'I'm going to end the world,' he tells Youngman Duran, a bemused and cynical ex-convict the Hopis have made into a deputy sherriff. Youngman understands his rage at the humiliations inflicted on their people and the desecration of their land, but still he smiles when he asks 'When?'

'Today.'

Next morning the old medicine man is dead, bled to death where he lies in the centre of his painting. Every night from then on Death stirs. Its sound is a whisper, its wings are wide and gossamer, its teeth are sharp as knives, its appetite is insatiable. As a carrier of the most virulent of all diseases, this Death becomes a tide that threatens to sweep man away from the American Southwest.

The burden of defeating this scourge falls on Youngman, who alone has understood the words of the painting, and on the obsessed scientist Hayden Paine, whose life is eaten up by its pursuit.

In this terrifyingly plausible novel Martin Cruz Smith takes us out to stand alone under the desert stars and shudder at the whisper of wings. He knows the people and the place at first hand, and he is a master storyteller who can create dramatic tension as powerfully as he can evoke the desert's harsh beauty. He also knows that the medicine man's black magic, however briskly it may be dismissed by science, continues to reverberate in the regions of the mind: an element which adds a specially haunting quality to this superb novel of suspense.
