Martin C. Strong has been researching and compiling discographies for over 30 years, among them The Great Metal Discography, The Great Alternative and Indie Discography (2 volumes), The Great Psychedelic Discography. The Great Rock Discography and The Essential Rock Discography. and the second installment of Lights, Camera, Soundtracks (with Brendon Griffin) which focuses on classical soundtracks and film scores. His final tomes were two volumes of The Great Folk Discography, published by Birlinn (publisher) in 2010 and 2011; a third part of the trilogy, The Great Folk Discography: The Celtic Connections.
"The definitive history of independent music - updated and revised. If Justin Timberlake doesn't get you going, if Britney Spears doesn't rub your rhubarb, then this is the book for you. In riveting and mind boggling detail, M. C. Strong has chronicled the careers of those musicians who positioned themselves outside the mainstream of conventional 'pop'. From the Americans like Velvet Underground and Captain Beefheart who offered something different to the flower power'n'peace of the 60s, through the filth and fury of punk, to the acid house culture that spawned the Happy Mondays and Primal Scream, and onto the ascension of grunge and its crown princes Nirvana: this is another dizzying feat of research from M. C. Strong.
For those with more discerning tastes there really is no alternative."
