As she rises from a poor Jewish childhood in turn-of-the-century Manchester, to a place in London society, involvement in a brief, tragic marriage and acquisition of some fame, Sadie exerts a power over men - not through a classical beauty, which she does not possess, but by means of a much stronger, more subtle appeal. The story takes her from London to America and finally to German-occupied France. Many of the characters in SADIE are based on relatives or people from family stories. The author's maternal grandmother who was very much the inspiration for Sadie was a great hoarder of trivia - love letters, old photographs - as well as being an incredible raconteur.
