Lothar-Gunther Buchheim U-BOAT First Edition

First UK edition, first print hardback of U-BOAT by Lothar-Gunther Buchheim and published by William Collins Sons & Co Ltd, London in 1974. Translated from the German by J. Maxwell Brownjohn. Original title: Das Boot

The book is in very good condition (Clean black cloth boards with silver lettering on spine) with slight wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped (some creasing/rubbing/chipping mainly to the edges and corners, one closed tear to the top edge at the back, a brownish stain inside the jacket which is only visible on a small part from outside). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions.

This is the story of a German submarine and her crew. From the jacket blurb:

"In 1941, when U-boat losses were mounting steadily, the vessel U-A slips out of the harbour of St. Nazaire. The ordinary day-to-day events of submarine warfare - the feelings of men imprisoned for weeks or months on end in restricted space; the hours of waiting in fear and the short dramatic moments of actual fighting - are brought to life by a man who was a naval war correspondent in WWII and member of the crew of a U-boat. He has been there and has remembered everything.

Buchheim recreates a world that only a few writers have personally experienced. It is a world where the boat acquires an almost human existence; where communication between men is limited to shouted orders and obscenities; a world in which freedom is a concept that becomes reality only when the boat can at last surface and the vast expanse of sea is seen again. In his descriptions of the sea itself Buchheim achieves the accuracy of the camera and the poetry that distinguishes Saint-Exupery's writing about the air.

Every word in this book is true. But it is truth illuminated by the novelist's imagination. U-boat is at once a history and an important literary achievement."
