First edition first print hardback of LADY WU: A True Story by Lin Yutang and published by William Heinemann Ltd in 1957.The book is in very good condition (green cloth boards with brown lettering to spine) with light creasing to the top and bottom edges of the spine as well as some light age tanning and foxing to the page edges. The book is in a very good unclipped dust jacket which has light creasing and rubbing to the edges and some light age staining to both covers, as well as some tiny closed tears here and there. Internally the pages are otherwise clean and tight and there are no tears or inscriptions.
The annals of Chinese history are particularly rich in such episodes, but the life of Lady Wu, with her love of pageantry, her political intriguing and religious enthusiasms, is one of the most curious. Lin Yutang has recreated her character and her times with the knowledge and skill his many readers have come to expect and admire so much.
