Reproduction hardback of THE HUNTING OF THE SNARK: An Agony in Eight Fits by Lewis Carroll. Foreword by Earl of Stockton Alexander Stockton. With nine illustrations by Henry Holiday and published by Macmillan and Co. in 1993. Gilt page edges. Gilt emblem to front and rear endpapers. Published to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Macmillan.
The book is in fine condition (burgundy cloth boards with decorated gilt frame and lettering to front and gilt lettering to spine) with no significant wear. The book is in the original publisher's glassine jacket. Internally the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears or inscriptions.
'THE HUNTING OF THE SNARK: An Agony in Eight Fits' is a nonsense poem. Written between 1874 and 1876, it borrows the setting, some creatures, and eight portmanteau words from Carroll's earlier poem "Jabberwocky" in his children's novel Through the Looking-Glass (1871).
