Born in Newport, Monmouthshire, 1931, Leslie Thomas was the son of a sailor who was lost at sea in 1943. His boyhood in an orphanage is evoked in This Time Next Week, published in 1964. At sixteen, he became a reporter, before going on to do his national service. Experience as a National Serviceman resulted in his first novel, the best-selling The Virgin Soldiers which has been published all over the world and was made into a successful film produced by Carl Foreman.

He won worldwide acclaim with this bestselling novel, which has achieved international sales of over four million copies. He is the author of thirty-one novels and three travel books Some Lovely Islands, My World of Islands and The Hidden Places of Britain. He has also written a second volume of autobiography, In My Wildest Dreams.

His novels include 'The Dangerous Davies Detective Series' which have been adapted on a television series in 1981. His latest novel is 'Soldiers and Lovers' published in 2007. Leslie Thomas has received an Honorary MA Degree from the University of Wales and an Honorary Doctorate of Literature from the University of Nottingham. He was awarded the OBE in the New Year Honours list of 2005.

For almost 40 years Leslie Thomas was one of Britains most popular novelists, a best-seller with thirty titles to his name and international sales figures exceeding fourteen million. His latest novel Soldiers and Lovers was published in 2007. Leslie Thomas passed away aged 83 on 6th May 2014 after a lengthy illness.

"'According to the story, I was conceived on the night of the great Armistice. Everyone was delirious with the celebrations: singing, drinking, wearing hats and jumping up and down, and it seems that my mother, Dora, did more jumping up and down than most. The ink was scarcely dry on the Treaty of Versailles before I was cawing in my cot.

'Confusion was rife that night, many errors were made, and it appears that my mother made one of them, with a soldier, on the unforgiving wood of a church pew. It was St David's, Barry Dock, and David I was called.'

Davy Jones is the hero of Leslie Thomas's extraordinary new novel; he is brought up by his Auntie Blod and Uncle Griff in Wales, his mother being too busy with her own affairs. The sea holds a powerful fascination for him and he becomes a merchant seaman, sailing on vessels, lowly and grand, through the war years and beyond. His journey take him from Barry back to Barry, via the Spanish Civil War, America, the Far East, Australia, the South Seas and many another clime. His roving life is a search for adventure, but it is also a quest for love - he is married three times; perhaps four. His first love, Dolly Powell, is also his romantic last."

'A delightfully rauchy story... a lovely blend of humour, sexual comedy and pathos' - Daily Express

'A rollicking tale of a Welsh sailor with a girl in every port, but only one true love at home...Thomas has a rare gift for words...This is his best book and a celebration of his robust talents, which combine flesh with imagination. He always had a narrative verve, and this saga develops it into a turn of the wheel of life. Revolving Jones comes back at last to his eternal miss, and hopefully, Leslie Thomas will achieve a revolution in his reputation' - The Times

'This exciting adventure story is also one man's pilgrimage, a lifetime's odyssey, a ritually layered tale of the quest for humour and love' - Daily Mail

'He inhabits that 'bestseller author' territory that includes the likes of Jeffrey Archer, Jack Higgins and Ken Follett, but he is a far better writer than any of them' - Marcel Berlins, Sunday Times
