Born in Newport, Monmouthshire, 1931, Leslie Thomas is the son of a sailor who was lost at sea in 1943. His boyhood in an orphanage is evoked in This Time Next Week, published in 1964. At sixteen, he became a reporter, before going on to do his national service. Experience as a National Serviceman resulted in his first novel, the best-selling ‘The Virgin Soldiers’ which has been published all over the world and was made into a successful film produced by Carl Foreman.
He won worldwide acclaim with this bestselling novel, which has achieved international sales of over four million copies. He is the author of thirty-one novels and three travel books – ‘Some Lovely Islands’, My World of Islands’ and ‘The Hidden Places of Britain’. He has also written a second volume of autobiography, ‘In My Wildest Dreams’.
His novels include 'The Dangerous Davies Detective Series' which have been adapted on a television series in 1981. His latest novel is 'Soldiers and Lovers' published in 2007. Leslie Thomas has received an Honorary MA Degree from the University of Wales and an Honorary Doctorate of Literature from the University of Nottingham. He was awarded the OBE in the New Year Honours list of 2005.
Dangerous Davies: The Last Detective
"'He is a drunk, lost, laughed at and frequently baffled; poor attributes for a detective. But he was called Dangerous Davies (because he was said to be harmless) and was known in the London police as 'the Last Detective' since he was never dispatched on any assignment unless it was very risky or there was no one else to send.'
Set in a dingy sector of North West London where little has changed since 1951, Leslie Thomas's novel is the tale of a man who becomes obsessed with a twent-five years old crime, and allows his obsession to lead him into a sequence of outlandish encounters.
As plain-clothes men go, Dangerous Davies looks like a non-starter. His 1937 Lagonda, his awful dog, his friendship with a drunken and unemployed Welsh philosopher, his quarrels with his landlady - none of these bodes well for the efficient solving of old crimes and the outwitting of villainy. Davies is an unlikely hero."
