Lesley Blanch PIERRE LOTI First Edition

First edition, first print hardback of PIERRE LOTI by Lesley Blanch and published by Collins in 1983.

The book is in very good condition (quarterbound boards with pink and green lettering to cloth spine) with just a bit of staining to the bottom page edges. The dust jacket, which is not price clipped, is in very good condition and has very light rubbing to the corners of the front and back covers and spine. Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions.

Pierre Loti, the once adulated French writer, is a subject of high romance. Exotic - erotic - neurotic were some of the labels loosely attached to this contradictory man. Born Julien Viaud, of an impoverished provincial family, he joined the navy to live adventurously across many seas to win fame and fortune by his books.

Above all, he was an accomplished escapist. From land, he escaped to sea. From physical shortcomings, he escaped by means of make-up, high heels and gruelling acrobatics.
