Leatrice Gilbert Fountain DARK STAR First Edition Signed

First UK edition first print hardback of DARK STAR (The Meteoric Rise and Eclipse of John Gilbert) by Leatrice Gilbert Fountain (with John Maxim) and published by Sidgwick & Jackson Ltd in 1985. Signed, dated and inscribed to a previous owner by Leatrice Gilbert Fountain on the half title page.

The book is in very good+ condition (black cloth boards with gold lettering to spine) with no significant wear to speak of. The book is in a very good+ unclipped dust jacket (protected in an archival sleeve) which also has no more than light creasing to edges. Internally the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions.

John Gilbert is often remembered for his scorching love scenes with Greta Garbo in silent films, as well as a costly failure in 'talkies' who dies young because of alcohol and a broken heart. The truth is very different, as his daughter Leatrice Gilbert Fountain reveals for the first time. She interviewed hundreds of people who worked with and respected her father - directors, writers, cameramen, actors and actresses - and they recall a much different John Gilbert: not just a romantic idol, but one of the most innovative and admired stars of his day. As will be revealed, Gilbert's decline was due to the hatred of one man, Louis B Mayer, the tyrranical head of MGM.
