The observer's pocket reference series first started in 1937. Its aim is to provide an introduction to a wide range of interests. They have also been popular amongst children. They have become collector's items. The first few Observer's titles had focused on nature, but gradually subjects like geology, music and architecture were introduced.
This No. 36 in the series. "England's heritage of old churches is unrivalled anywhere in the world, for nearly every village has its church dating from Norman or even Saxon times, and there are ten thousand churches of medieval foundation. Visits to these churches can be much more rewarding if the visitor knows what to look for, and it is this background knowledge that the present volume aims to provide.
The author's plan is to describe the various features of a church as they would appear to an observer walking first round the outside and then along the inside to the high altar at its east end. Numerous examples are cited of each feature mentioned, and the book is illustrated by 44 plates and many drawings to the text. The author is Honorary Lecturer to the Historic Churches Preservation Trust."
