First edition, first print hardback of TWO WOMEN by Laurie Lee and published by Andre Deutsch Limited in 1983. This is the suppressed first edition with the two-page nude photograph of his wife, which was omitted from later editions.The book is in very good condition (red cloth boards with gold lettering to spine) with light creasing to the top and bottom of the spine. The dust jacket, which is price clipped, is in very good- condition with rubbing and creasing to edges and corners. Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions.
Laurie Lee, master of words, is here discovered to be also a master of images: a photographer of rare talent.
This book is simply composed of photographs of his wife and daughter, accompanied by a commentary of great charm in which he crystallizes his experience of marriage and fatherhood. He tells how he met Cathy when he was twenty-two and she was five; how they married some thirteen years later; how they waited twelve years for Jessy; and how Jessy astonished him when she came. It is no surprise that a poet should make something enchanting out of this quite straightforward story...
