Laurie Lee A MOMENT OF WAR First Edition

First edition first print hardback of A MOMENT OF WAR by Laurie Lee and published by Viking in 1991. Full numberline 1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2.

The book is in very good+ condition (black cloth boards with silver lettering to spine) with light creasing to the top of the spine. The book is in a very good- unclipped dust jacket which has light creasing to the top and bottom of the front and back covers and a fingernail closed tear to the top of the spine which is also lightly creased. Internally the pages are lightly yellowed but are otherwise clean and tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions.

In this volume of Laurie Lee's autobiographical trilogy, which began with Cider with Rosie and As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning, he describes walking over the Pyrenees as a naive and romantic young man to join the International Brigades and the bitter winter leading to the Republican Army's defeat in December 1937. Reflecting on what compelled him to go to Spain, Laurie Lee recalls that he wanted 'the chance to make one grand gesture of personal sacrifice and faith which might never occur again'. A Moment of War is an ironic, elegiac account of youthful idealism at the end of Auden's 'low dishonest decade'.
