The purpose of this anthology is firstly to illustrate the extraordinary range and quality of tales collected in the field in the British Isles; secondly, through these tales, to exemplify the work of as many of the great storytellers and collectors as possible; and thirdly, to show the literary reteller of tales at work in verse and prose: in short, to offer as representative an anthology of the folk-tales of the British Isles as seems possible. Each storyteller, collector and writer is briefly introduced in the paragraphs at the head of the book's twelve sections.
