Justin Cartwright was born in South Africa and educated in America and at Oxford University. His father was the editor of the Rand Daily Mail, and a non-fiction writer. Before turning to fiction, Justin worked as a copywriter in an ad agency, where his success writing pet food commercials led to work directing commercials. He also wrote documentaries for tv and two thrillers. In 1984 he started writing the book that was to become his first novel, Interior, which was published to great acclaim in 1988.

He continued writing fiction alongside managing election broadcasts for the Liberal Party and the then SDP Liberal Alliance. His books include Look at it this Way, Interior, Masai Dreaming, In Every Face I Meet, which was shortlisted for both the Booker Prize and the Whitbread Novel Award in 1995, and won a Commonwealth Writers Prize, Leading the Cheers which won the Whitbread Book Award for 1998, The Promise of Happiness, which was the winner of the 2005 Hawthornden Prize and the Sunday Times of South Africa Prize, The Song Before it is Sung (2007), White Lightning which was shortlisted for the Whitbread Novel of the Year Award and most recently To Heaven by Water (2009), Other People's Money and Lion Heart.

Look at it this Way was made into a three-part, 180-minutes drama by the BBC in 1992, starring Kristin Scott Thomas; Cartwright wrote the screenplay.

"Justin Cartwright brings his acute observation and sharp humour to bear on London.

From the moment an unemployed City broker is devoured by an escapee from the Zoo, we are embarked upon a dazzling journey through nineties' London. Shabby yet vital, down and out yet wealthy, blighted by ugliness yet momentarily illuminated by beauty, it is London instantly and painfully familiar - but disturbingly strange as its inner life is laid bare.

From Docklands to the Zoo we move through a city peopled by a rich and varied cast of characters - from the City, journalism, the criminal world, advertising, music-hall and the East End. Lurking in the background is nemesis in the shape of a hungry lion.

Look at it this Way is a pointed look at London, as experience as full of contradictions, sensuality, warmth and humour as life itself in the big city. A gripping and believable story."
