First edition first print hardback of THE OBSERVER'S BOOK OF FURNITURE by John Woodforde. Illustrated by Roy Spencer and published by Frederick Warne & Co. Ltd., London in 1964. The Observer's pocket series No.35. Describes furniture from Tudor to Victorian times with 195 line illustrations.

The book is in good condition (brown cloth boards with dark brown lettering to spine and front) with light creasing to the spine edges and staining to the page edges. The book is in a good unclipped dust jacket which has slight creasing to the edges, some chipping to the corners and spine edges, a one centimeter closed tear to the top spine corner and some tanning to the spine. There is also a large brownish liquid stain inside the jacket which is not visible from outside. Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions.

How much more profitable visits to country houses and auction rooms would be if we were familiar with the antique furniture which we would be likely to see there. For these purposes Mr. Woodforde has prepared this volume with special attention to quick, on-the-spot reference. The furniture is grouped in the conventional periods, Tudor, Stuart, Georgian, Regency and Victorian. In each the examples are set out in the same order - chests, chairs, tables and other living-room and bedroom furniture. For more leisurely reading every period has a general introduction. There are five attractive line drawings of typical interiors of the times and the 190 articles of furniture described are authentically illustrated. Rare features of this book are the coloured endpapers of different woods and the drawings of handles. There is also a glossary of technical terms and the book is fully indexed.
