John Wilsey H JONES VC Signed First Edition

First edition, first print hardback of H JONES VC, The Life and Death of an Unusual Hero, by John Wilsey, published by Hutchinson, London, in 2002. Signed and inscribed by the author on the title page. Foreword By John Keegan.

The book is in very good condition (Clean black cloth boards with gold lettering on the spine which has minor creasing to the bottom spine edge) with only light shelf wear to the dust jacket which is not price clipped (minor fading to the spine and a tiny finger nail tear near the spine edge on the front). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears. Previous owner gift inscription below the author's. There is minor tanning towards the page ends but nothing too drastic.

"'A remarkable book ... a worthy tribute both to the man John Wilsey calls 'an unusual hero' and to the ethos of the British Army in which he lived and died.' John Keegan in his Foreword.

This is the biography of the Falklands War hero whose death in the battle for Darwin and Goose Green was one of the turning points in the whole campaign. It is written with the consent of H. Jones's widow, Sara, and is published to coincide with the twentieth anniversary of his death at the climax of the Falklands War.

It is the story of an emblematic but complex war hero whose family history was unusual, whose army life included exposure to most of the military problems which Britain has encountered since the Second World War (including security in Northern Ireland, where H. Jones was responsible for the search for Robert Nairac), and whose dramatic death and subsequent posthumous VC symbolised an extraordinary campaign which was truly the end of an era."

General Sir John Wilsey is a a former Commander-in-Chief Land Command, and was a close friend and army colleague of Lieutenant-Colonel H. Jones. He went on to become General Officer Commanding Northern Ireland from 1990 to 1993. It was in this capacity that he oversaw the merger between the Ulster Defence Regiment and the Royal Irish Rangers to form the Royal Irish Regiment. In 1993 he was appointed Joint Commander of Operations in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia. He served as the last Commander in Chief, UK Land Forces from 1993 to 1995 and then the first Commander-in-Chief, Land Command from 1995 to 1996. He also became Chairman of Western Provident Association and Vice-Chairman of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
