John Updike S A NOVEL First Edition

First UK edition, first print hardback of S. A NOVEL, by John Updike and published by Andre Deutsch Ltd, London in 1988.

The book is in very good condition (purple boards are in good condition and bright, gold lettering on spine) with minor shelf wear to the paper dust jacket, which is not price clipped (minor creasing to edges). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions.

From the dust jacket blurb:

Sarah Worth -- S. - has walked out on her family in order to follow a spiritual teacher who has brought his community from India to Arizona. There his followers are worshipping through work in an attempt to make the desert fruitful, while he passes among them from time to time, his presence bestowing ineffable bliss.

We learn the story from communications sent by S. to her husband, daughter, her best friend -- to her shrink and various other people -- The twist given to this hilarious and alarming novel by the robustness of S.'s American soul - a quality which she herself is hardly aware of to start with - must not be revealed here. In taking as his subject one of those hungry - not to say greedy - sheep who are in constant pursuit of shepherds, however dubious. John Updike has struck a vein of marvelling (and marvellous) humour which is irresistible.
