John Taylor Gordon Swanborough CIVIL AIRCRAFT OF THE WORLD First Edition
First edition in this format, first print hardback of CIVIL AIRCRAFT OF THE WORLD by John W. R. Taylor and Gordon Swanborough and published by Ian Allan Ltd., in 1972.
The book is in very good condition (Clean blue cloth boards with silver lettering on spine), with only minor wear to the pictorial dust jacket which is not price clipped (very slight creasing to the edges, minor rubbing to a couple of corners and light tanning inside the jacket). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions.
John William Ransom Taylor (1922 1999) was a British aviation expert and editor. He trained as a draughtsman and joined Hawker Aircraft in 1941. There he worked on the development of the Hurricane fighter and its successors. His specialisation was rectifying design defects. He joined Jane's as editorial assistant on Jane's All the World's Aircraft in 1955 and four years later he took over as editor.
Until the late 1960s he edited this volume with virtually no editorial support but his love of aviation was such that this was a challenge he enjoyed. Taylor, who lived to the age of 77, was a master of a parallel art to Kremlinology, he could deduce the performance of Soviet military equipment from blurred photographs.
"First compiled in 1967, Civil Aircraft of The World takes on a slightly new appearance with a larger page size and a more imaginative layout. It has been produced in this manner as a companion volume to Military Aircraft of The World, which was so favourably received by readers in many countries.
All significant civil-registered aeroplanes holding certificates of airworthiness throughout the world are fully described and illustrated. No other book in the market gives such comprehensive coverage of the airliners, flying freighters, business, sporting and agricultural aircraft now (then) in service or under development. The book is in three parts.
The first deals with major airliners in service and under development. The second is considered with third-level airliners, air taxis, larger utility aircraft and business twins, and the third with club, touring, private, agricultural and smaller single-engined utility and business aircraft."
169 glossy pages. Illustrated with black and white and several colour photographs. Includes an index.
