First edition first print hardback of CATHERINE THE GREAT: LIFE AND LEGEND by John T. Alexander and published by Oxford University Press in 1989.The book is in near fine condition (quarter-bound brown paper boards with gilt lettering to black cloth spine) with light creasing to the bottom of the spine and lightly yellowed page edges. The book is in a very good unclipped dust jacket which has some light colour fading, light creasing to the top of the front cover and top and bottom of the spine, which also has some light rubbing. Internally the pages are lightly age tanned but clean and tight and there are no tears or inscriptions.
The result of 20 years' research by one of America's leading narrative historians of modern Russia, this is truly an impressive work. Alexander delved into little-known sources (including a collection of Catherine's love notes which is included here as an appendix) as well as popular and specialized accounts to arrive at this much-needed, balanced appraisal of one of history's most scandal-ridden figures.
