John Steinbeck TRAVELS WITH CHARLEY First Edition

First USA edition, first print hardback of TRAVELS WITH CHARLEY by John Steinbeck and published by The Viking Press in 1962.

The book is in very good- condition (cream cloth boards) with light soiling to both boards, rubbing to the corners and very light creasing to the bottom of the spine which is also slightly weak. The dust jacket is missing. Internally, the pages are lightly tanned and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions.

In Travels with Charley Steinbeck tells of traveling throughout the United States in a specially made camper he named Rocinante, after Don Quixote's horse.

His travels start in Long Island, New York, and roughly follow the outer border of the United States, from Maine to the Pacific Northwest, down into his native Salinas Valley in California, across to Texas, up through the Deep South, and then back to New York all with his poodle, Charley, who accompanies him throughout the nearly 10,000 mile trip.
